Distraction for commercial drivers results in tragic accidents

Safely operating a motor vehicle requires Florida drivers to be alert, attentive and appropriately licensed. Drivers who are not can put themselves and everyone sharing the road with them in danger.

The bigger a vehicle is, the more concentration and skill it can take to operate it safely. Even slight mistakes or brief distractions while driving a bus or truck can lead to catastrophic crashes because it can be more difficult to recover from a loss of control and the size of the vehicle has the potential to do great amounts of damage.

For instance, recently in another state, a bus driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into nine vehicles stopped at a traffic light. The bus was travelling at about 50 mph when it struck the vehicles and no evasive measures were taken by the driver to avoid hitting them.

Surprisingly and thankfully, no one was killed in the accident. However, seven people were injured, including two people who suffered injuries reported to be serious.

Police reports indicate that the bus driver was looking away from the road for about 10 seconds. In that amount of time and at that speed, the bus driver would have traveled hundreds of feet without ever looking up. Because of his distraction, he failed to see the stopped traffic and could not do anything to avoid crashing into the cars in time.

The bus driver, like other distracted drivers, received multiple tickets and was arrested, but that may be of little comfort to the injured victims. In order to find some sense of closure and justice, they and any other person injured by a distracted commercial vehicle driver may want to seriously consider the options for filing a personal injury claim.

Lawsuits and compensation can't undo an accident or the reckless actions of another person, but they can help people recover from the damages they have suffered and hold the liable party financially and legally responsible.
