Florida leads the nation in fatal motorcycle accidents

Florida offers year-round warm weather and beautiful scenery, which attracts many visitors to the state. Interestingly, these favorable conditions also attract motorcyclists, who are able to ride twelve months out of the year, as compared to only five or six months in many other states. More motorcyclists may mean more motorcycle accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida has more deaths from motorcycle accidents than any other state in the nation.

In 2013, 467 motorcyclists died in Florida, which represents roughly ten percent of the total number of fatalities nationwide. Interestingly, though fatalities rose over all age groups between 2004 and 2013, up 16 percent, the most significant rise is in the 40-and-older age group, with an increase of 30 percent. Additionally, a greater percentage of motorcycles are involved in fatal crashes than other motor vehicles annually. For every 100,000 registered motorcycles in 2013, 56 of those were involved in fatal crashes in 2013. This is a significant difference from the nine of 100,000 passenger cars involved in fatal crashes the same year.

Roughly 50 percent of those motorcyclists who died in a 2013 fatal Florida accident were not wearing motorcycle helmets, which are not required by law in the state. According to one motorcycle enthusiast, however, even a motorcycle helmet will not provide sufficient protection to save a person's life if he or she is involved in a major collision.

Motorcycles, of course, present dangers if a rider is involved in an accident, just as motor vehicles do. If your loved one has died in a motorcycle accident, you may have a cause of injury for wrongful death, particularly if a loved one's death was due to the negligence of a distracted driver. An attorney may be able to offer guidance.
