Ocala residents: what to do after a car accident

Ocala residents involved in a serious car wreck may not know what to do first. It can be a frightening and confusing experience, and even a minor fender-bender could cause anger or frustration to surface, making it difficult to remember what to do after a car accident. Therefore, let's take a look at some important steps to take if you are involved in a car accident.

First of all, make sure that everyone involved in the wreck is uninjured. If there are serious injuries, call for an ambulance. Do not move a person who has lost consciousness or has injured his or her back unless you must do so to avoid further danger, such as a fire. Wait until professional medical assistance arrives at the scene.

Secondly, phone the police. When police arrive at the scene, they call for extra medical help if necessary. They can also observe the crash and write up a police report with information regarding any property damage, injuries or fatalities. In addition, stay at the scene of the accident. Leaving before police arrive or before you exchange insurance information can cause significant problems, and in some cases could even be a criminal act.

After this, exchange insurance information with the other motorists involved, along with their names, drivers' license numbers and contact information. In addition, talk to anyone who may have witnessed the crash, and get their names and contact information as well. Even though it may be difficult, try to stay calm and do not get confrontational. On the other hand, don't apologize, as this could be seen as admitting to fault.

After the accident, keep records of any medical treatment you underwent in relation to the crash. This includes not only an emergency room bill, but also any therapy or further medical care you needed afterwards. This could help serve as evidence of the medical expenses you incurred in the crash.

These are only some basic tips to keep in mind should you be involved in a car crash. If you have been in a crash that you believe was the fault of the other driver, and you wish to seek compensation, you may want to consider consulting with a legal professional to determine if this is a possibility.
