Summertime sees uptick in car accidents involving teen drivers

Getting their driver's licenses is a right of passage for many teenagers in Ocala. Now that summer is here, these teens may be heading out to the beach, heading to amusement parks, going to the movies or even simply meeting up with friends. However, a teenage driver's inexperience on the road can cause problems, and could lead to car accidents.

In fact, according to one study, the summertime, and specifically, the 100 days after Memorial day, sees the most fatal accidents involving teen drivers. The study looked at motor vehicle accidents involving individuals between 16 and 19 years old, and found an increase of 16 percent in fatal accidents in the summer when compared to the rest of the year. The study attributes this to the fact that more teen drivers are out on the road during the summertime. The study reports that over 5,000 individuals lost their lives in automobile accidents involving teenagers during the 100 days after Memorial Day over the past five years.

The study also found that more teens these days are texting and driving. Driving with friends in the vehicle can also be a distraction. According to the study, distracted driving is still one of the main causes of car accidents involving teenage drivers. The study reports that when it comes to teenage drivers, 15 percent of accidents can be attributed to talking to others in the vehicle, while 12 percent of accidents can be attributed to using a cellphone while driving.

Teen drivers may be excited to hit the road this summer, but just like drivers of any age, they have a duty to drive reasonably under the circumstances. Doing so will keep them, and other drivers, safe while on the road.
