Florida law bans texting and driving

Some residents of Ocala may be eagerly anticipating the latest innovations in smartphone technology. Smartphones can do more than make a phone call. They can send a text message or email, surf the Internet, play music, provide maps and directions and so much more. It is no surprise that people want to have their phones on them at all times, even when they're driving. However, cell phones and driving can be a deadly combination when they lead to fatal distracted driving accidents.

It is for this reason that Florida has enacted the "Florida Ban on Texting While Driving Law." The goal of the law is to improve safety on Florida's roadways for all uses, prevent crashes related to texting and driving and to reduce injuries and fatalities related to such crashes.

Under the law, a person cannot drive while manually typing or entering more than one symbol, character, number or letter on a cell phone or other type of wireless communication device meant for non-voice interpersonal communication. This includes text messaging, sending emails and instant messaging. That being said, if the vehicle is stationary and is not being operated, it is not subject to the texting and driving ban.

Some people might assume that texting and driving is not as serious as the law makes it out to be, but distracted drivers are a danger not just to themselves but to other motorists and pedestrians on the road. It only takes a split-second of inattention for a serious or even fatal car accident to occur. In the end, there is no text, no email that is so important that it can't wait until the driver can safely pull over or park the vehicle, to avoid causing an accident.
