Florida takes steps to reduce number of fatal car accidents

In Florida, concern over the number of fatal auto accidents has led to statewide attempts to call attention to the problem. The number of people who have been dying in crashes since 2014 has been increasing. Because of that, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FDHSMV) has started a campaign called "Arrive Alive." FDHSMV says that several factors have contributed to the rise including state geography, an increase in population and tourism. The program to promote safety is the first that is using data from several sources to boost safety.

In 2016, there were 3,062 traffic deaths. This is an increase of 120 from 2015 and 565 from 2014. Already in 2017, there have been 143 traffic deaths in the state. The rest of the country has also seen an increase in fatal auto accidents with a rise of 7.2 percent from 2014 to 2015. That is the largest rise in 50 years. The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety provided this information. They stated that the initial data says that there was an 8 percent rise through September of 2016 in comparison to the same period from 2015.

Florida is known as one of the states that has the fewest laws to deal with safety in the nation. Recommendations that are meant to increase safety include laws to restrict texting and driving, mandatory seatbelt use, restricted licensing procedures for teens, and rules for driving under the influence among others. The Arrive Alive program is not calling for new laws. It will instead have greater police presence, education for drivers, and engineering changes in areas where there are a high number of fatal accidents.

These strategies are being enacted to decrease the troublesome number of fatalities that are happening on the roads in the state. While this is a notable goal for regulatory agencies to undertake, even the most ambitious and well-executed plans will not prevent all accidents from happening. There are a variety of reasons that these collisions can occur with a number of outcomes from minor injuries to significant injuries to fatalities. Those who are injured in car accidents need to be aware of their rights to be compensated. Discussing the matter with an attorney is the first step.
