Car accidents can cause fatalities when drivers are negligent

Because of the significant amount of vehicles on roadways these days, collisions occur all too frequently. When drivers are negligent, the risk of car accidents goes up. A recent Florida accident left two men dead and three women injured because of the actions of a negligent driver.

While traveling eastbound on a local highway, the driver of an SUV drifted into the westbound lane where a pickup truck was headed west. After the SUV crossed the center line, it struck the pickup head-on. The impact pushed the SUV onto the shoulder of the road and caused the pickup to come to a stop after landing in a nearby canal. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, but they indicate that alcohol was not a factor.

Tragically, the two male drivers were severely injured and pronounced dead at the scene. Three female passengers were also hurt in the collision, including an 11-year-old. The Florida Highway Patrol stated that the injured victims were flown by helicopter for medical care. Reports do not specify whether any of the victims were wearing seat belts prior to the crash.

When incidents like this occur, surviving family members  of deceased victims may be entitled to receive monetary compensation to help pay for medical bills, funeral costs and other financial losses related to the accident. Those who have lost loved ones may file a wrongful death claim against the party or parties believed negligent (including the estate of a deceased party, if applicable), while those injured could file a personal injury claim. Compensation could be awarded if a claim proves successful in civil court. An experienced Florida personal injury attorney could help those involved in car accidents by providing advice and assisting in the litigation process.
