Drunk driver crashes into university student, killing him

Drunk drivers in Florida can do substantial damage due to their decisions to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Some of these car accidents fortunately do not cause injuries or death. Others, however, injure and kill others. Making matters worse is when the alleged drunk driver chooses to flee the scene. Regardless of the details of the accident, a person who has been injured, or a family who has lost a loved one in a drunk driving crash needs to know what to do next to be potentially compensated for medical costs, other expenses, and the personal turmoil that inevitably arises after these crashes.

A student at the University of Florida died after he was hit by a drunk driver as he waited at a bus stop recently. The student, 22, was hit by a white Hyundai Sonata that ran off the road as it tried to negotiate a curve. The driver fled the scene, making it a hit-and-run. Not long after, a vehicle was spotted being operated recklessly and at excessive speed. It also had a flat tire. Law enforcement eventually stopped the car and arrested the 23-year-old female driver.

When her blood-alcohol content was tested, the driver registered a .14. This is nearly twice the legal amount in the state. The victim had head trauma and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The woman was placed under arrest for numerous charges including DUI manslaughter, two counts of DUI damage to person or property, and for a crash involving death and failing to stop.

One of the worst phone calls that a family can receive is when they are informed that a loved one has been killed in a motor vehicle accident. Worsening matters is when these crashes involve a drunk driver and the vehicle departed the scene. Given the amount of loss that goes along with these accidents, the family members must protect their rights by gathering evidence and considering taking the necessary steps to pursue a wrongful death claim. A legal professional experienced in drunk drivers and hit-and-run accidents may be able to provide assistance in moving forward with litigation.
