Just how prevalent are Florida car accidents?

Floridians, like most residents of the United States, drive a lot. Because of its large geographic size, there are many thousands of miles of roadways that connect the various population centers in the Sunshine State. Further, even in the urban area, the lack of efficient public transportation leads to many vehicle miles traveled by individuals getting to and from work or other destinations. While most Florida drivers are likely aware that there are risks inherent to using motor vehicles on public roads, just how many car accidents are there in the state?

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), there were over 340,000 traffic accidents in 2015, which involved over 630,000 drivers. Both those statistics were up more than eight-and-a-half percent over the prior year. Greater than 150,000 of those crashes involved injuries, and, in over 2,600 of them, someone was killed.

While the causes of these kinds of accidents are many and varied, the DHSMV reported some major culprits. About 16,400 of these accidents involved drivers who were suspected of using alcohol, and over 900 people were killed that year in such crashes. Drugs other than alcohol were suspected as being involved in almost 2,000 other accidents, possibly causing as many as 375 more deaths.

While it is true that there are many drivers on the road every day in Florida, the fact that over half-a-million of them will be involved in an accident in a given year may be a sobering thought. Further, as can be seen by the above statistics, many of these crashes should be avoidable if drivers would abstain from the use of alcohol and drugs while operating motor vehicles. When you or a loved one becomes a part of this statistical set of car accident victims, especially due to the actions of a drunk driver, you may wish to consider how to best protect your legal right to compensation.
