Ocala-area motorcyclist critically hurt in accident

Florida is a state uniquely suited for certain activities. The warm weather and prevalence of clear, sunny days makes many outdoor activities very appealing for the state's residents and visitors. One of these is the riding of various types of 'open-topped' vehicles, such as convertible cars, and, especially, motorcycles. Since the state has many stretches of long, flat roadway, motorcycle enthusiasts generally find many places where they can enjoy their riding.

Unfortunately, the state is also growing in population, and this means more vehicles on the road, with a commensurate rise in the risk of accidents involving motorcycles and other motor vehicles. One such crash occurred recently in the Ocala area, with serious consequences for the driver of the motorbike.

In the middle of a Friday afternoon, a pick-up truck reportedly turned right onto one of the older U.S. highways in the area, and into the path of an on-coming motorcycle. According to witnesses, the motorcyclist attempted to avoid the other vehicle, and struck the median, made of grass, in the middle of the road. At this point, the biker lost control of his bike, and became airborne, landing some 100 feet from where the motorcycle came to rest. It is reported that the motorcycle rider lost his helmet in process. The victim was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

The above accident can serve as an example of some of the dangers faced by those riding motorcycles on Florida roads. Even those who wear safety equipment, like helmets, can be seriously hurt in accidents involving other vehicles. When other drivers fail to yield or create a dangerous situation through their negligence, and an individual is hurt as a result of a motorcycle accident, the victim may have a legal claim for civil damages.
