Why are commercial vehicle accidents more likely to cause injury?

Commercial vehicles are ubiquitous on Florida roads. The use of ground transportation to move various goods around the state continues to grow and doesn't show any signs of letting up. This means that motorists are sharing the roads with more and more tractor trailers or 'big rigs.' Due to this, the danger of commercial vehicle accidents remains an ever-constant threat to drivers in Florida. These accidents can result in catastrophic injuries to those in a car or other personal vehicle.

This blog has previously mentioned the weight restrictions that the state and federal governments imposte on commercial trucks. There is good reason for this. As trucks tend to be both long and heavy, they have poorer handling characteristics than smaller vehicles. This means that they turn more widely, take more distance to come to a complete stop, and react to emergent situations more slowly. Further, their length usually leads to large 'blind spots' in which other vehicles cannot be seen by the commercial vehicle driver.

Due to the above factors, being around trucks can be dangerous for other motorists. And, when a collision with a big rig does occur, drivers of personal vehicles may be more likely to suffer serious injuries. This is because of the weight and force ratios involved. Of course, these ratios are dictated by the basic physics that control our world, so all that can be done is to limit the amount of weight these trucks can carry, and try to make drivers aware of the limitations and dangers of commercial vehicles.

Since commercial vehicles are such an integral part of Florida's modern economy, society has deemed their presence on the roads an acceptable risk to take. Drivers need to ensure that they minimize this risk by being careful and aware of the limitations big trucks face, and planning accordingly when driving around them. When a commercial vehicle accident does happen, however, injured parties may wish to evaluate whether they have legal options to recover damages for their injuries.
