Texting while driving can cause car accidents in Florida

Florida collisions are often the result of distracted drivers. Texting while driving is a common cause of car accidents that can have serious consequences. One driver who law enforcement authorities say was texting while driving was recently charged after hitting a police officer with his vehicle.

The officer was working alongside two other officers to monitor speeds with a radar gun outside his patrol car when the accident occurred. The driver who caused the crash lost control of his vehicle. His car struck several other nearby patrol cars before colliding with the victim. Authorities determined that the man lost control because he was trying to text while driving.

Though the specifics of his injuries were not revealed, the victim was seriously injured and spent several weeks in the intensive care unit at a local hospital. He has since been moved to a private room but continues to face a lengthy recovery period. The driver who hit him was charged with several offenses, including reckless driving, reckless driving that causes serious bodily injury and reckless driving causing property damage.

Because of his injuries, the victim may consider filing a personal injury claim against the driver who caused the crash -- this claim would be separate from any workers' compensation benefits to which he i likely entitled. If his claim is successful, he could receive monetary damages to help pay the cost of his medical bills and any other financial expenses related to the accident. An experienced Florida personal injury attorney could assist those injured in car accidents by providing more information about personal injury claims and by offering support and guidance throughout the filing process.
