Auto accidents can be deadly for pedestrians

Added caution is required whenever drivers are traveling through areas with a heavy pedestrian presence. When motorists fail to remain aware of their surroundings in these areas, auto accidents leading to serious injuries are more likely to occur. The family of a pedestrian struck and killed in Florida may consider securing legal counsel in the aftermath of this recent tragedy.

The local sheriff's office reported that the victim was attempting to cross U.S. Highway 98 in the early morning hours of June 7. In the process, she was struck by a car just past 3 a.m. Police stated that the driver of the vehicle that hit the victim stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Sadly, the victim died from the injuries she suffered in the collision. The highway was blocked for several hours while the sheriff's office investigated the incident. According to officials, this victim was the third to be struck by a car while crossing this stretch of highway in the last month.

The victim's surviving family has every right to consult a Florida personal injury attorney with regard to this tragedy. Two aspects of the media report appear to warrant further scrutiny. First, there have been three pedestrian versus auto accidents in that traffic area within the last month, suggesting safety concerns that may have gone unheeded. Second, a photo accompanying the news article shows yellow police tape in the area of a marked pedestrian crosswalk, suggesting that the victim was attempting to cross the roadway in that area. Depending on the gathered facts, the family may have grounds for pursuing a wrongful death claim in civil court.
