How prevalent are Florida motorcycle accidents?

Florida is an outdoors activity state. Given the generally mild temperatures and good weather that lasts almost all year round, the state abounds in opportunities for people to get out and enjoy the environment through various means, whether it be parasailing or canoeing. For some people, this means hitting the open road, of which Florida has many hundreds of miles, on their motorcycles. Because it is a large state and has such good weather, there tend to be many who engage in this pursuit.

Along with this large number of motorcyclists, however, comes another distinction: leading the country in motorcycle deaths. According to reports, Florida is annually one of the top states for fatalities from motorcycle accidents. But just how many crashes are we discussing when it comes to problems for motorcyclists on Florida roads?

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2015, the last year for which complete numbers are available, there were over 10,000 accidents involving motorcycles. Moreover, greater than 8,000 people riding motorcycles were injured that year. Almost 550 of those injured were killed.

As we have touched on before, the small size of motorcycles make them more difficult to see for other drivers, and their relatively low mass means that they are likely to 'lose' in a collision with a larger, heavier vehicle. Further, the fact that they tend to lack the safety features that cars and trucks generally provide, as well as the fact that Florida law does not mandate the wearing of safety equipment, such as helmets, means that motorcyclists are more likely to sustain serious injury. Unfortunately, even the best, most careful drivers can fall victim to an accident caused by someone else's negligence, whether it be a drunk driver or simply failure to yield right of way. Those that have been injured in motorcycle accidents may want to consider how to protect their legal rights to compensation.
