Auto accidents involving speeding can lead to fatalities

For many Florida drivers, driving over the speed limit may not seem like a big deal. Drivers may find themselves late for work or an appointment and try to get to their destinations as quickly as possible. However, many serious auto accidents result from speeding. A man and his grandson were both recently killed by a driver believed to be speeding.

The two victims were exiting a park in their pickup truck when the crash occurred. Police stated that as the truck entered the intersection, another car allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into the driver's side of the truck. The truck overturned, ejecting the elder victim, before rolling into the southbound lanes and catching fire. The other car also caught fire.

At least one witness called 911 but was unable to do anything else to help the victims because of the fires. Emergency responders from several agencies responded to the accident. Though the extent of their injuries was not reported, both the grandfather and grandson passed away. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police plan to subpoena his medical blood and toxicology reports.

The loss of two family members in such a way would be heartbreaking for any family. Whether criminal charges are filed against the driver believed to be at fault remains to be seen, the victims' family may seek relief by filing wrongful death claims against that driver in civil court. They could be awarded monetary damages to help pay for funeral costs and other related expenses if their claim is successful. Other families who have lost loved ones in auto accidents could speak to Florida personal injury attorneys to learn more about these types of claims.
