Families may seek wrongful death claims when loved ones killed

In addition to the emotional toil of losing a loved one in a car accident, surviving families may also face unexpected financial concerns. To help cope with these, a family may be able to file a wrongful death claim on behalf of their deceased relative. One family may be considering filing after a Florida woman was killed in a recent crash.

According to authorities, the accident was the result of a police chase. When officers attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation, the car fled and officers pursued. The driver allegedly ran a stop sign, hitting the victim's SUV. The force of the impact caused the SUV to overturn and the car to spin, striking two other vehicles.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Another driver suffered minor injuries, but declined hospitalization. No one else was injured. The two occupants in the car being chased by police attempted to flee on foot; one was apprehended and charged with multiple offenses, while the other is still at large.

Because the investigation is still ongoing, the victim's surviving family may decide to file a wrongful death claim once authorities have determined the identity of the driver believed to have caused the accident. When such a claim successfully proves negligence on behalf of another party, the claimants may be awarded monetary damages that could help cover expenses such as medical bills or funeral costs. Any families interested in learning more about this type of claim could consult experienced Florida attorneys for more information.
