Nothing Matters More Than Your Health. Our Results Show We Can Help

The devastation of a spinal cord injury is real for victims

You never saw the truck coming, and seconds later, you found yourself in a vehicle coming to rest on the wrong side of the road. Thankful that you were alive, you tried to get up out of your seat. That's when you realized you couldn't feel anything from your waist down.

Paralysis happens when the nerves cannot connect from one point of the body to another through the spinal cord. For example, if the spinal cord is severed at the waist, it's likely you won't have movement or feeling below the waist. If you do, it may be sporadic or weak.

The trouble with spinal cord injuries is that they're incredibly difficult to treat. Initially, a course of steroids might be used to reduce inflammation as quickly as possible, since this can reduce further damage. Besides that, once a spinal injury takes place, there are few solid manners in which to treat the loss of movement or sensation.

Are there new therapies to fix spinal cord injuries?

There are some new therapies for those with spinal injuries. For instance, stimulation therapies could help individuals use the parts of their bodies below the point of injury by implanting a device to receive electrical signals. Essentially, rerouting the nerves helps the individual retain one's movement and sensation. This is a new technology, so it still has a long way to go before it's used by the public.

What should you do if you suffer a spinal injury?

Spinal injuries are life changing, so it's important to talk to your attorney about what you need in the future as well as your immediate medical concerns. You may need long-term payments to cover new therapies and medical options you want to try in the future.
